Two members of SCCC were successfully in the CA Challenge and Gilbey Tournament which took place at the club ground this year.
Myra Gosney won the Reckitt Cup and John Low won the Council Cup. Both were unbeaten in their respective events.
On Saturday evening the Club hosted a French Dinner for players and guests.

The August Tournament was completed yesterday, with 35 players in the 4 class singles events. Weather had been interesting at times (it's hail, not snow!)..

The 2-day, 2-legged doubles event was won by Paul Castell and Marie Young who held their title from the previous year, beating Alan Theobald and John Geoghegan. 12 pairs took part, slightly up on last year. Paul Castell was also the Champion Peeler in the event.
The results on the class singles events:
The Abbey Challenge Cup was won by Jack Davies with 5/6 wins in the block. Both Paul Castell and Mark Fawcett ended with 4 wins apiece, with Paul being declared runner up on quality of wins.
The Scott Cup was won by Alan Mayne who beat Mary Knapp in the event final.
The Daldy Cup was won by Christine Constable with 4/4 wins in the block. Quiller Barrett, John Gosney and John Smallbone all had 2/4 wins, with John Gosney being declared runner up on quality of wins.
The handicap event ended with Nigel Wilson, Keith Slatter and Margaret Russell all on 4 wins, with the Monteith Bowl being won by Nigel Wilson on quality of wins.
Three CA merit awards were won during the tournament: Neil Coote and Paul Schofield both achieved the Silver Award and Margaret Russell achieved the Bronze Award.
Congratulations to all the winners!

Thinking ahead to next year, the Manager is considering making two proposals to the Sussex County Croquet Club for the handicap event, which proved a bit of a trial of endurance. The first suggestion is that only two games should be played on the Saturday. Of the players who expressed a preference, 5/7 wanted to continue with the current 3 games.
The second suggestion is to use a base of 10 for the event, so that nearly all players will have some bisques. All 4 players who expressed a preference, preferred to use base 10.
If any other handicap player wishes to communicate their view, please email the webmaster (webmaster@sussexcountycroquetclub.org.uk), who will pass them on.
The Castell Soda Syphons were won by Pat and Richard Jackson in a closely fought final against Myra Gosney and John Constable.
This is a new tournament, played as alternate stroke doubles, a format which Paul Castell has been championing for some time.
Thanks to Paul for organising and managing the weekend, as well as providing an unusual pair of trophies for the event.
The two-evening tournament had to be shortened to one evening, due to the torrential rain on the first day. As 8 members had signed up a knockout mini-tournament was played.
The bottle of wine was taken home by Paul Castell, who beat Jack Davies in the final 14-0. 3rd place went to Myra Gosney who slaughtered John Low 13-1 in the playoff.
It was good fun, so perhaps we should have someone like it once a month next season?
Rutger Beijderwellen today won the Sussex Open Golf Croquet Chapionship in a field of 16, beating Alan Cottle 6-7, 7-2, 7-3.

SOUTHWICK
OPEN GOLF TOURNAMENT
REPORT
Rutger Beijderwellen wins at Southwick
With Wimbledon, Glastonbury and the Southwick Open Golf Tournament all on the same weekend and coupled with wind and rain on Friday, players woke up on Saturday morning to be greeted by dark clouds and howling winds and expecting the worst; but at 9 .30 on the dot, the clouds parted and the sun came out. There was a mixed field of sixteen players in this years event including the CA chairman Jonathan Isaacs playing in this very first golf croquet tournament. There were two blocks of eight all play all playing one 19 point game.
At the end of Saturday, Block A was very tight with four players all on 5 wins each, Carol Jackson beaten Rutger Beijderwellen in first game of the day. In Block B, Mark Hamilton and Alan Cottle were leading with five wins each. The final round of the block was postponed to Sunday as the chairman of the CA decided to light up the BBQ and treat the players and members to some wonderfully cooked lamb.
Sunday saw the last game in the blocks and the start of the knockout, Three of the quarter finals were over in quick time but Richard Thompson and Mark Hamilton had a battle on lawn two with Tournament Manager John Low setting a time limit of 30 minutes after one and quarter hours play; Mark ended up the winner 10-9 with five minutes to spare.
In the first semi final, Carol Jackson from South Africa took the first game in a best of three but Alan Cottle came back to win 2-1 to reach his second final in this event; in the other semi Mark took on Rutger going down 7-1 in the first only to come back and win the second 7-6 the third saw Rutger reach the final in a close run match winning 7-5.
The first game of the final was a very close run game with both players hitting well at 6 all. Rutger had first run at hoop thirteen but left his shot short. Alan ran of the boundary; Rutger then played to just in front of the hoop leaving Alan with no choice but to play a long jump shot from the boundary - 7-6 to Alan. Rutger Beijderwellen asked to change lawns as he was unhappy with the condition of lawn one. This is the first time I have seen this at a tournament. Alan is also in charge of the lawns at Southwick, and he having no objection, the manager moved play to lawn five - a decision that Alan may have later regretted as Rutger upped his game and won the next two games 7-2 7-2 taking the Southwick Open Golf tournament for the first time.

The match will consist of 21 matches (9 doubles, 12 singles). It has the potential to produce the highest quality of play ever seen and the result should be a nail biter.

If you are prepared to act as a scorer and/or on-court referee (and save £5!) then please email the webmaster who will forward your message to the appropriate person. There will be a barbecue on the Saturday evening and if you would like to attend that please also email the webmaster of this site.

Sussex County Croquet Club v Medway (away) For the third year running we were drawn against Medway in the First Round. Medway were again able to field a much stronger team than us, with three 1 handicap players and a 4 against our range of 3.5 to 7. In the morning, we lost the doubles and one of the singles, with the other match pegged down as unfinished. This meant that we had to win all four singles in the afternoon to stay in the tie. Medway obviously didn't mean to let us do this, as we were fed and watered handsomely over lunch! Despite (or because of) this, our two Johns (Taylor and Gosney) managed to beat their lower handicap opponents, but Medway's other players proved too strong for Gene Mears and Brian Kitching in the remaining two matches. As a result, we lost the tie 4-2 with one match unfinished. Details (Southwick players first):Details (Southwick players first):
